FAQ’s

Sugaring is gentle enough for delicate skin and can be applied on any body part except the scalp or men’s facial hair (due to the coarseness and thickness).

Here are some of the most common areas (time and price may vary depending on hair growth):

  • Underarms: An experienced Sugarists can sugar your underarms in under 5 minutes
  • Arms: Depending on how much and how long the hair is (and whether or not you shave this area), sugaring the arms can take about 15-30 minutes
  • Bikini/Brazilian: This area typically takes between 30 to 45 minutes to sugar
  • Legs/Back/Chest: The sugaring process will take longer for larger areas and ones with more hair growth—expect the appointment to last about 30-60 minutes
  • Eye Brows/Upper Lip/Chin: These areas generally take about 5-15 minutes

Is sugaring less painful than waxing?

Let’s get one thing straight: Sugaring doesn’t not hurt. That said, many people do find it less painful than waxing. Sugaring does not stick to live skin cells—only to the hair and dead skin cells—which means less irritation and discomfort. There’s still a bit of an ouch factor when sugaring, as it’s still pulling out hair from the root, but the feedback received from clients is that most find it less painful than waxing. And because sugaring may thin the hair and damage the hair follicle, over time, the procedure will be less painful.

What is the aftercare of sugaring like?

While sugaring is a pretty straight-forward process, there are some things to bear in mind in terms of aftercare, especially when it comes to your genital bits. After a Bikini or Brazilian, wearing loose clothing is important to let your skin breathe. Avoid working out or sitting in a tub, Jacuzzi, sauna, or anything with high heat and moisture—the area will be sensitive and is more prone to bacteria. Showering is permitted, but exfoliation should wait for 24 hours afterward, as should skin-to-skin contact (yep, that includes sex).

24 hours post-sugaring though is a different ballgame. It’s crucial to exfoliate your skin every day to avoid ingrown hairs. It is also recommended to use Vitamin E and aloe for moisturizing the skin following a treatment. Keeping the skin hydrated and healthy can also help decrease inflammation and deter the chance of infection.

How long does sugaring results last?

Sugaring results typically last around three to five weeks depending on the area and the rate at which your hair grows. The beauty of sugaring is that it may reduce hair growth over time, meaning you’ll have less hair to sugar each time a new appointment rolls around. I recommend booking your hair removal appointments on a regular maintenance schedule (every four to six weeks) to ensure the smoothest result and most painless service possible.

Are there any risks or side effects?

You may experience temporary redness, irritation, and itching immediately after your sugaring session. These side effects are pretty common, but remember to resist the temptation to itch, this could create tears or scarring of the skin. If your skin is very sensitive or thin in places (i.e. the creases), you may also develop some bruising, bumps, or rashes wherever the paste was applied and removed. All that said, sugaring typically process few side effects.

Can I get sugared if I am menstruating?

Absolutely, but it is completely up to you. While sugaring intimate areas can still be done during your monthly cycle, generally, skin is more sensitive and your pain tolerance is lower during this time-you may opt to reschedule. However, if you are comfortable, it is fine to get sugared while on your period. If this is the case, I just ask that you wear a tampon.

Can I get sugared if I’m pregnant?

One of the things that you’ll notice during pregnancy is that your hair will grow at a faster rate, thicker, and darker. All thanks to your hormones! Choosing the healthiest option for your baby and body is important, while also keeping yourselves groomed. Many mommas-to-be nowadays have moved from waxing to body sugaring.

Why is body sugaring safe?

Body sugaring is a natural way to remove unwanted hair and a completely safe process for mom and for baby. The reason has a lot to do with the paste I use. The sugar paste is made only from lemon, water, and sugar. It does not contain any harsh chemicals that can seep into the skin and cause harm to the baby.

Another thing to look at is the hygiene of the treatment. It is such a nightmare for mom-to be to have contracted bacteria from other women, especially if you’re having a Brazilian wax. This might come from double dipping or unsterile tools used during waxing. It is scientifically proven that bacteria breed in wax while sugar is bacteria resistant. The sugaring treatment I preform is also done in the ancient ways without using sticks or strips which prevent double dipping. So you can rest assure that sugaring treatment is hygienic and definitely more superior than waxing.

Do I need to take any precautions?

During pregnancy, you will have more blood pumping around your body which can also mean better circulation to the skin. This of course will cause a much more intense feeling when the hair and sugar are finally removed. Besides, your skin will become far more sensitive. You need to be prepared because the increased sensitivity might also lead to an increased risk of skin irritation. Body sugaring treatment is the best choice in reducing the risks of skin irritation because the paste doesn’t stick to the skin. Instead, it only sticks to the hair that needs to be removed.

Keep in mind that a sugaring treatment is generally safe for pregnant women as long as you’re past your 1st trimester in a healthy pregnancy. However, it is best to consult with your physician or obstetrician especially if you’re experiencing other health conditions such as high blood pressure or gestational diabetes. Your doctor should be able to give you the best advice.

When should sugaring NOT be done?

If there’s an active skin disease on the desired sugaring area—such as folliculitis—sugaring needs to be avoided, as it can exacerbate the issue. You should also not have sugaring done if any of the following apply:

  • If you’re using Retinol or Vitamin C creams on your skin
  • You’re taking steroids
  • You’re on Accutane
  • Have ultra sensitive skin
  • You have a sunburn
  • If you have Psoriasis or Eczema
  • Have active breakouts
  • You have bruising, swelling, rashes, open sores, or cold sores

These are the key factors to consider, but there are other conditions that would make you a poor candidate as well, for sugaring and any other hair removal techniques. As always, please consult your physician and/or dermatologist before trying any new treatment.

Can sugaring be done at home?

Sugaring should be left to the pros. Sugaring should always be done to clean skin by a trained professional to minimize any complications or risks. Mastering the paste will take time and you can end up with hard candy. Not to mention, it can be a painful and messy process if you’re not trained.
